Amazing Street Art on Railings by Zebrating

0
0

Street artists Zebrating are an incredible duo from Mannheim, Germany. Zebrating loosely translates to, ‘making the zebra’, which describes their artistic style that uses a striping technique (like that of a zebra’s). Railings lend nicely to this style as the vertical rails are already evenly spaced to start.

According to an interview the duo did for streetlove.fr, their artistic influences include: C215 (another street artist), M.C. Escher, Egon Schiele and Klimt.

Much of their work can be seen in Mannheim, but they have started to hit other cities in Germany like Berlin and Stuttgart. The Sifter looks forward to seeing more of their amazing work, which you can track on their Facebook page!

Spotted somewhere in France was this fun piece of street art by CLET. The manipulated ‘Do Not Enter’ sign depicts a bar setting with two patrons and a bartender. There’s even a fancy candelabra in the scene! CLET is well known for playing around with ‘Do Not Enter’ signs all around Europe. 15 Street Art Portraits Chiseled Into Walls

Alexandre Farto aka Vhils is an artist from Lisbon, Portugal. The son of a dissident in Portugal’s Carnation Revolution, Vhils first rose to prominence when one of his portraits appeared next to a work by Banksy at the 2008 Cans Festival in London. Now, at 25, he’s the youngest artist represented by Banksy’s agent, Steve Lazarides. [Source: The Atlantic]

Vhils works in a variety of mediums but he is well known for his chiseled wall portraits of ordinary citizens. Through a combination of paint, chiseling and negative space, Vhils portraits come to life, projecting from the walls like a relief painting. Be sure to check out his personal website, alexandrefarto.com to see all of his fascinating artwork. There’s also a video at the bottom of the post that documents the process he uses to create his chiseled wall portraits.

You’ve Never Seen a Trailer Park Like This [15 pics]

SuttonBeresCuller are an American art triumvirate from Seattle, Washington (John Sutton, Ben Beres and Zac Culler). For over a decade the trio have been working together since meeting at Cornish College of the Arts

Trailer Park is a mobile art installation first conceived in 2003 in Seattle, Washington. During that spring and summer, the mobile parkette featuring a bench, fountain, live plants, trees and grass toured the city, inviting people to have a seat on the modified flat bed trailer.

In September of 2012, the Trailer Park was revived for the Idea Festival at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts in Louisville. Pictures of both trailers can be found below.

Check out SuttonBeresCuller.com for more fantastic artwork.

The Water-Activated Oak Tree Mural in Hartford

As part of the statewide City Canvas public art program, Adam Niklewicz’s water-activated oak tree mural was unveiled last month in downtown Hartford, Connecticut.

The brick around the tree is weather-treated. The area of the tree drawing is not. When the wall gets wet, the bricks in the tree-drawing area become soaked and dark and the treated bricks do not, causing the image to appear sharply on the wall. [Source: Hartford Courant]

The image of the tree is from a famous painting by Charles DeWolf Brownell entitled, The Charter Oak, from 1857. The mural measures 30ft in height by 45 feet in length. The entire wall is about 37ft tall and 125 ft wide.

To create the artwork, Niklewicz, along with his assitant J.D. Richey, cut a massive rubber stencil of the Charter Oak in a studio and then affixed the stencil to the building’s facade (located at 215 Pearl Street). The building used to be a synagogue, which was vacated and deconsecrated in 1986.

The mural is equipped with two lawn sprinkler systems. There are three heads on the bottom and two hanging from the roof. While a heavy rainstorm mixed with the right wind power and angle could reveal the tree, the sprinklers turn on for about 20 minutes every day at 3pm to insure the image shows clearly. Depending on weather conditions (humidity is a plus), the mural can remain visible from several hours afterwards all the way to the next morning.

After the installation runs its course (no specific date has been set), the wall can be easily returned to its original state.

David Zinn has been creating original artwork in and around Ann Arbor, Michigan since 1987. He’s a self-taught artist with a B.A. in Creative Writing and English Language from the Residential College of the University of Michigan.

In addition to his fabulous 3D chalk art, Zinn also has an impressive portfolio of posters, illustrations and logo design.

In David’s ongoing chalk art series, he brings a wonderful collection of creatures and animals to life. One of the most popular characters is the adorable Sluggo who seems to get into all kinds of fun and mischief with his friends.

I love how Zinn incorporates elements of the city into his work. He uses cracks in the sidewalk, draws on the sides of fountains, and even manages to make his characters peek around corners! Below you will find a small selection of David’s amazing work. Be sure to visit his website for 60+ chalk art images, they are all equally wonderful!

If you’re interested in Mr. Zinn’s services, he is available for any and all of the following:

- Illustration for books, brochures, advertisements, t-shirts, bus signs, presentations, etc.
- Graphic design for posters, brochures, advertisements, t-shirts, etc.
- Logo Design
- Educational Comics
- Chalk Art

12 Twisted Metal Street Art Murals by DALeast

DALeast landed on this planet in 1984 in China, he then decided to live as an artist in this life. He studied sculpture at the Institute of Fine Arts and began doing art on public space at 2004 under the alias DAL. He is inspired by the way the material world revolves, how the spiritual world unfolds, life’s emotions and the infinite space around us.

In the jaw-dropping street art murals below, we see DALeast’s twisted metal animals come to life. The scale and intricate detail in his work is enough to stop any onlooker in their path. His unique style of street art is both original and refreshing.

If you’re in the New York City area, DALeast has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery from Dec. 1 – Dec. 29, 2012.

Haunting 3D Images Projected Onto Trees

Clement Briend is a photographer living and working in Paris, France. He is also a professor of photography at the University of Valenciennes. Briend studied at the Ecole Louis Lumiere and specializes in projecting images onto various surfaces and then taking photographs of the hybrid imagery.

In his series entitled ‘Cambodian Trees‘, Briend projects haunting images of Cambodian spirits and deities onto trees around Phnom Penh. The night time incarnation of these cultural figures set against the urban environment of the capital city gives these photos an incredible feel.

You can find the entire series on Briend’s website. For those interested in limited edition prints, Briend is represented by wall30.

3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

3d printed lego street art greg petchkovsky 2 3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

Through a combination of 3D scanning, 3D digital modelling and 3D printing, artist Greg Petchkovsky created an incredible sandstone block that appears to be made out of LEGO. He then placed the 3D printed piece into a real sandstone step, achieving a brilliant and creative effect. Find out how he did it below.

3d printed lego street art greg petchkovsky 5 3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

The first step is to take a number of photos from various angles. The images were then imported into a software program called Agisoft Photoscan. Greg took about 29 photos and Agisoft was able to create a 3D mesh (wireframe) that Greg could use and manipulate. Greg then had to correct the scale of the 3D mesh as the program produces an arbitrary scale.

3d printed lego street art greg petchkovsky 3 3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

Greg then imported the 3D mesh into 3DS Max. Using polygon modelling techniques, Greg built the LEGO brick shapes based on actual dimensions. Greg then placed copies of the LEGO brick model inside the volume of the chipped off corner to make it appear as if the block was made from LEGO pieces. He then combined the replacement corner model with the LEGO brick models. Greg says this was the most challenging part of the entire process.

3d printed lego street art greg petchkovsky 6 3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

To make the piece fit the real step perfectly, Greg subtracted the scanned mesh from his 3D model using booleans. He then printed the model using Shapeways. The material selected was called ‘full color sandstone’ and cost him $16.89 to print.

3d printed lego street art greg petchkovsky 8 3D Printed LEGO Block Blended into a Chipped Step

The printed piece had slightly incorrect colours so Greg painted it lightly with acrylic paint to make it match the actual sandstone brick more closely.

The project was Greg’s submission to the Instructables.com ‘Make it Real‘ competition. There are some amazing entries (1,132 to be exact) and while Greg didn’t win the grand prize, he has certainly won the Internet as his project has begun to make the rounds online (e.g., Wired and Reddit)

Polish street artists Sainer and Bezt are doing some incredible artwork around Europe. Together, they are the Etam Cru and they are putting Polish street art on the map with their incredible large-scale pieces that can span buildings 10 stories high.

While the gallery below highlights their street art murals, both artists also do fantastic canvas work using oils and acrylics. You can find an extensive gallery of both artists (both individually and as ‘Etam’) on their official website: etamcru.com

The Street Art of Kenny Random [21 pics]

Kenny Random is a street artist hailing from Padova, Italy. Beyond that there is not much information on the artist aside from his fantastic artwork that can be seen on his personal website and Facebook. His older work primarily centers around a silhouetted man and his cat. They can be spotted roaming the city, injecting colour and traipsing over poorly scrawled graffiti.

In his newer work, Kenny incorporates cartoon characters. As he explains to My Modern Met:

“I like playing with fantasy and reality, so I try and find the best location to give more power to all the cartoon characters. Cartoons are very powerful on paper, but on the street they become part of real life; the right place can give them an amazing power!”

Painting Miniature Apartment Buildings around the City

Evol is a German artist currently living and working in Berlin. Born in Heilbronn, Germany, he attended the Kuopio Acadamy of Arts and Crafts in Finland and has a degree in product design from HFG Schwäbisch Gmünd in Germany. Evol has had solo exhibits in Germany, Belgium, China and the United States.

While his gallery work includes installations and paintings on cardboard, his work in the streets primarily centers around apartment buildings. Using a layered stencil technique, Evol transforms the unlikeliest of mediums into the outside of mundane, everyday apartment buildings. There’s depth to his artwork and they are so realistic you may catch yourself wondering if there are little people in each of the units going about their lives.

To see more of Evol’s work, be sure to check him out on Flickr. You can also find him on his personal website evoltaste.com (although it hasn’t been updated in a couple of years).

The Artwork of Liu Bolin the Invisible Man [25 pics]

Liu Bolin is an artist from China’s Shandong province. Born in 1973, he currently lives and works in Beijing. Bolin received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Shandong College of Arts in 1995 and his Master of Fine Arts from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2001. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world.

Known as The Invisible Man, Bolin’s most popular works are from his “Hiding in the City” series; photographic works that began as performance art in 2005. Helped by his assistants, Bolin stands still for hours in a landscape while they paint on him to create a camouflage, blending him into his surroundings. Bolin states:

“My intention was not to disappear in the environment but instead to let the environment take possession of me.”

Bolin is not looking for a way to disappear as an individual but insists on the damages caused by the economic and urban development on the individuals. This is a kind of silent hold where the human being loses his capacity to integrate. Bolin followed up his Beijing series of Hiding in the City with two derivative series of performances captured in Venice and New York City. Following the method of painting himself into the cityscapes, Liu choose Venice for its significance within the Western art tradition and New York City for the potency of the underlying conflicts between humans and the objects they create. [Source 1, 2]

Founded in 2006 by Flore and Romain Degoul, Galerie Paris-Beijing is dedicated to represent emerging and established artists within two main artistic focuses which are contemporary photography and more generally, the Asian art scene. On their website you can find an extensive collection of Liu Bolin’s work.

With galleries in Paris, Brussels and Beijing. Bolin has two upcoming solo exhibitions at Galeria Paris-Beijing. In Paris, Bolin has a solo exhibition from January 10th – March 9th, 2013. And in Brussels, Bolin will have a solo exhibit running from March 7th – May 11th, 2013. For more information please visit Galerie Paris-Beijing’s official website.

The Boneyard Project: Resurrecting Planes Through Art

0
0

Conceived in Spring 2010 by Eric Firestone and organized with curator Carlo McCormick, The Bone Yard Project revives disused airplanes from America’s military history through the creative intervention of contemporary artists, taking entire airplanes and their elements out of aeronautic resting spots in the desert, known as boneyards, and putting them into the hands of artists.

Renowned street artists from around the globe gathered at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona to resurrect these relics and give them new life as an art canvas. The first part of the Boneyard Project, Nose Job, made its debut in the summer of 2011 with an exhibition of nose cones taken from military airplanes and given to artists to use as eccentric-shaped canvases at the Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton, Long Island.

In the second installment, Round Trip, more than 30 artists participated, including DC 3 planes painted by graffiti artists How & Nosm, Nunca, and Retna; a C97 cockpit by Saner; and C45 planes by Faile and Andrew Schoultz.

The Pima Air & Space Museum is the largest non-government funded aviation museum in the United States, and one of the largest in the world. It maintains a collection of more than 300 aircraft and spacecraft from around the globe and more than 125,000 artifacts.

Painter Turns Tree Holes into Works of Art

0

In the city of Shijiazhuang, China, an artist has brought smiles to pedestrians by painting drab tree holes and turning them into works of art. Since February, over eleven tree trunks on Jiuzhong Street have become the canvas for aspiring 23 year-old art student, Wang Yue.

Each piece takes Wang about two hours to complete. The local environmental protection bureau has approved the artworks and publicly stated that the paints used will not harm the tree and will eventually wash away over time.

Wang Yue’s artwork has received much praise in the Chinese media. The splash of colour has been welcomed by the citizens of Shijiazhuang, a city of over ten million people, known for having some of the worst air pollution in the world.

Subtle Street Art by Alexey Menschikov

Alexey Menschikov is an artist and photographer from Russia. Like most street artists, information on Alexey is sparse. His street art style is simple and subtle, often integrating elements like cracks on the pavement and paint chips on a wall into his work. To see all of this work check Menschikov at the links below.

Lenticular Street Art by Roa

0
0

ROA is an artist from Ghent, Belgium. His artwork can be seen on the streets and in galleries across Europe and the United States and he is best known for his black and white animal street art. Back in 2009, ROA created an incredible lenticular street artwork that showed both the insides and outsides of a rabbit. As the viewer walked from one side to the other, the artwork shifted as well, showing either its furry coat or circulatory system.

The artwork was located on Curtain Road between Great Eastern Street and Old Street in London, England. You can find all angles below. I also put together an animated gif of the piece at the end of the post.

To see more from ROA check out his tumblr and Flickr page. I’ve also embedded a video from Warholian that divulges some of this thoughts about his artwork and shows newer stuff from a recent gallery show.
