Playful Diversions on the Streets of France by OakOak

0
0

OakOak is a street artist from Saint-Étienne, France, whose playful diversions bring smiles to those who come across his work. The Outsiders Gallery sums up his style nicely:

Pen-pusher by day, street art superhero by night, Saint-Étienne sensation OakOak’s hilarious, imaginative, irreverent and sometimes a little macabre street work has filled column inches from BBC Brazil to Beijing’s biggest daily newspaper… Daubing simple graffiti and paintings on urban features – often the broken ones – OakOak does what street art does best, amuse and inspire people of all ages and demographics by appropriating the city’s less appealing elements.

OakOak is a street artist, but he is not a fine artist painting in public. His work, either on the streets of his native St Etienne, France, or made on his travels, is opportunistic and never “authorised”. He is completely untrained in art and works full-time in an office. Whilst his favourite artist is Amedeo Modigliani, he cites his main influences as football, comic books, video games and his home town. “I like this city, her atmosphere” OakOak says of Saint-Étienne “and I wanted it to look nicer. It was an industrial city with many coal mines; now it’s in regeneration and still quite poor. But it’s easily travelled by foot with awkward aspects ideal for art. I saw shapes everywhere, and wanted to realise them.”

THE SPIRIT OF DETROIT

detroit chimera mural russel industrial complex building kobie solomon Picture of the Day: The Spirit of Detroit

Located on the westward-facing wall of the Russel’ Industrial Complex’s Building #2 is this colossal 8,750 square foot (813 sq m) mural by artist Kobie Solomon. Dubbed The Chimera, it’s purportedly the largest graffiti mural in the state of Michigan and can be easily seen by passersby on Interstate 75.

If you’re not familiar with Detroit sports the symbolism might be lost on you, but what you’re looking it is a hybrid animal representing Detroit’s official teams: The Detroit Lions (football), The Detroit Tigers (baseball), The Detroit Redwings (hockey), and The Detroit Pistons (basketball).

Although a traditional Chimera, according to Greek mythology, is usually depicted as a lion, snake and goat, this interpretation is simply awesome.

Spotted in Fort-de-France, Martinique, is this awesome street art mural that incorporates the tree situated directly behind the wall of the artwork. The piece was done by Nuxuno Xän. The photo was taken by Rosali Rodrigues and submitted to Street Art Utopia.

Fort-de-France is the capital of France’s Caribbean overseas department of Martinique. It is also one of the major cities in the Caribbean.

Reverse Graffiti: Washing Walls to Create Art

Tess Jakubec is an artist and student currently attending the UBC (University of British Columbia) in Vancouver, Canada. In the series below, Tess washes away dirt and grime from walls to create her street art landscapes. Similar to scrawling on a dirty car by simply wiping away dirt with your finger; Tess uses a combination of water, stencil, brushes and rags (and probably some kind of cleaning solution) to create what’s known as reverse graffiti.

The Unseen Lives of Miniature Cement People

Isaac Cordal is a Spanish artist that has been working on his own projects since 1999. His ongoing series entitled Cement Eclipses began in art school in 2002 but he didn’t start placing them on the streets until 2006, with his first piece laid in the city of Vigo, Spain.

Cordal makes the tiny sculptures in his apartment/home studio. He has placed them in major cities all around Europe including: London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Milan, Berlin and Brussels. “Small interventions in big cities,” is how Cordal characterized Cement Eclipses.

In a 2012 interview with Agenda Magazine, Cordal explains:

“Our gaze is so strongly focused on beautiful, large things, whereas the city also contains zones that have the potential to be beautiful, or that were really beautiful in the past, which we overlook. I find it really interesting to go looking for those very places and via small-scale interventions to develop a different way of looking at our behaviour as a social mass.”

Featured previously on the Sifter back in 2011, below is a collection of Cordal’s more recent work. To stay up to date with the latest, be sure to follow Isaac at the links listed below.

Artist Covers Car in Chalkboard Paint, Lets People Draw On It

chalkboard art car philip romano new york (2)

When 20-year-old artist Philip Romano got his first car, he decided to turn it into an interactive art project. Using four cans of chalkboard paint and a roller, he turned a 2004 Red Hyundai Elantra into a moving art exhibit for all ages.

Now whenever Romano parks his ‘canvas’, he makes sure to leave a box of chalk for people to use on his car. He even invested in a vanity license plate that says, “DRAW ON ME”.

The car has been a hit and people have been loving the concept. It has brightened people’s day and the best part is that it just takes a little rain to ‘clean’ the canvas.

Romano, who is majoring in psychology and linguistics at upstate State University of New York-Geneseo, tells New York Daily News:

“I love it when people write, ‘Thanks for this,’. It’s kind of like a puppy, you can’t help but smile when you see it.”

Someone Crocheted a Giant Sweater for this Mister Rogers Statue

0

Located near Heinz Field on the North Shore in Pittsburgh, is a large 10 ft bronze sculpture of Pennsylvania native, Mister Fred Rogers. The statue, created by artist Robert Berks, weighs about 4 tons and was dedicated on November 5, 2009. [Source]

Two years later, artist Alicia Kachmar crocheted a gigantic red cardigan sweater for the statue. The red cardigan was arguably Rogers’ most recognizable piece of clothing worn on his famous children’s television series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

Alicia said the idea was started by the Outpost Journal, a not-for-profit art and design publication. Outpost had put out a request for capable crocheters in the area and Alicia answered the call.

In an interview with Misters Rogers & Me, Alicia explains:

“I worked during the day and then babysat until 11pm every night, so I would work on it after my ‘charge’ went to bed. I don’t even want to know how many hours it took! It took many many, skeins of yarn, and I actually crocheted with 3 strands of yarn together and a giant crochet hook… Because of the way the statue was made, with his arms against his legs, I couldn’t just ‘crochet a sweater’; it had to be done in panels and then sewn onto him. The part of the sweater that I am most proud of is the zipper–it’s a real zipper!”

If you’d like to see more crocheted artworks by Alicia be sure to check out her official website and Etsy store.

‘Exploded View’ Street Art Murals by Nychos

Nychos is an artist and illustrator from Austria. His interest in anatomy has greatly influenced his artwork and in a recent interview with Hypebeast, Nychos explains:

“My dad and my grandpa were traditional Austrian hunters, so I think that is where some of my interest in anatomy comes from. Seeing a deer dissected for the first time was very inspiring for me. Seeing all the guts and intestines drop out, it was a bit crazy at first, but using all of this anatomy I think have found something I can stick with and really go crazy on. It’s staying fresh for me because I am always finding new ways to do it.”

Nychos combines a cartoon-style illustration with an exploded view drawing technique to create intriguing and often larger-than-life murals.

Throughout 2013/14 Nychos is traveling with Austrian documentary filmmaker Christian Fischer to capture the journey of a rising artist in the international art scene. The film From The Deepest Depth of the Burrow, will follow Nychos as he travels throughout North America and Europe creating murals, graffiti and preparing for numerous gallery shows.

Nychos is also the founder of the art collective and art space Rabbit Eye Movement. He is also one of ten members of The Weird crew, founded in 2011.

Artwork and Photography by Mona Caron

In this brilliant street art painting by Mona Caron, we see a utility box painted to show us what this intersection could look like.

Located at Church St. and Duboce Ave. in San Francisco, the artwork comes to life when you look at it from a specific point and distance. The project was commissioned by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency.

Funnily enough, the mural (known as the Duboce Bikeway Mural) seen on and behind the utility box was also done by Caron and measures an impressive 340 ft long by 18 ft high (103.6m x 5.5m)!

Below you can see what the actual intersection looks like. For more, check out monacaron.com. You can also keep up with her latest projects on Facebook.

Crocheting a Locomotive in Lodz, Poland

Although currently living in the United States, crochet artist Olek recently returned to her native country of Poland for an epic project. Over the course of two straight (and rainy) days, Olek and her team of four assistants ‘yarn bombed’ an entire locomotive with two freight cars in tow. Olek had already crocheted many of the panels beforehand but they still had to be assembled to cover the train.

The team worked through the night to pull off the massive undertaking, debuting the crocheted train on July 13th. It will be on display in Lodz, Poland, until August 19th. The project was done in collaboration with the city and was authorized. She calls the piece ‘Deadly Romance’.

In this cheerful piece of street art we see the famous cartoon character Mr. Magoo, who was created at the UPA animation studio in 1949 and voiced by Jim Backus. Magoo has even won 2 Oscars for Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons).

The artwork was done by Pao, an Italian artist who was born and raised in Milan where he lives and works to this day. You can find his playful diversions on the streets of Milan and also keep up with his latest projects on Facebook.

For those unfamiliar with the picture’s title, “Oh Magoo, you’ve done it again!”, it is the character’s catchphrase :)

BANKSY CONVERTS A NEW YORK DELIVERY TRUCK

banksy truck new york city 2013 Picture of the Day: Banksy Converts a New York Delivery Truck

Artwork by Banksy

For the month of October, Banksy is attempting to host an entire show on the streets of New York entitled, Better Out Than In. The roaming exhibit features an audio guide which can be accessed by dialing a 1-800 number. You can see all works to date on banksyny.com.

In a piece entitled All City, a converted delivery truck was unveiled somewhere in the East Village on Saturday. The storage area was converted into a mobile garden and the truck will visit a different location for the remainder of the month. You can hear the audio guide by calling 1-800 656 4271 # 3

The audio guide says the 1992 GMC ‘diesel-powered landscape’ delivers ‘calm’ and features a working waterfall. The audio guide goes on to mention that, ‘such a juxtaposition is a common theme for the artist—or put another way, he just keeps repeating himself.’

Isaac Cordal’s Miniature City in Ruins Installation in Nantes, France

0
0

Earlier this year, artist Isaac Cordal (previously featured here and here) unveiled one of his most ambitious installations to date, entitled, Follow the leaders.

Located in Nantes, France, the project took three months of planning. The installation occupies a 20 m x 18 m (65 x 59 ft) space consisting of over 2000 individual pieces including: concrete buildings and lamp posts that light up at night, hundreds of figurines, and gravel from demolished buildings around town.

In the project description Cordal states the installation, ‘represents a kind of city in ruins: a metaphor for the collapse of capitalism and the side effects of progress. Follow the leaders is a critical reflection on our inertia as a social mass. Representing a social stereotype associated with power compound businessmen who run the global social spectrum.’

BANKSY LOOKS FOR LOVE
IN HELL’S KITCHEN

Artwork by Banksy

Better Out Than In, Banksy’s ‘one month artist residency on the streets of New York’, is sadly coming to an end. Each day of October has brought a fresh surprise and today was no different.

Located outside of a strip club in Hell’s Kitchen was the stencil above. The post was simply titled, Waiting in vain… at the door of the club

Hell’s Kitchen is a neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City between 34th Street and 59th Street, from Eighth Avenue to the Hudson River. According to Wikipedia, its gritty reputation kept real estate prices below those of most other areas of Manhattan until the early 1990s; however rents have increased dramatically since and are currently above the Manhattan average. What the Bobsled Track from the Sarajevo ’84 Olympics Looks Like Today

The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics will be the first time since 1984 that the winter games will take place in Eastern Europe. The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games, took place from 8–19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, in present-day Bosnia-Herzegovina. It was the first Winter Olympics and the second consecutive Olympics held in a Communist state (the first was the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union). [Source]

The Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track used for the ’84 Olympics was situated on Trebević mountain overlooking the City of Sarajevo. During the games the track had 20,000 luge spectators and 30,000 bobsled spectators. After the Winter Olympics, the track was used for World Cup competitions until the start of the Yugoslav wars in 1991 that would include the Siege of Sarajevo the following year.

The track was damaged as a result of the siege which occurred during the Bosnian War. During the siege, the track was used as an artillery position by Bosnian Serb forces. Today, the tracks still remain mostly intact with war wounds of defensive fighting holes, drilled into one of the last turns of the course. [Source]

The abandoned, war-torn track is now a destination for urban explorers. Nature is slowly growing over the area and the remnants of the course is now covered in graffiti. Below you will find images of what the former Olympic site looks like today.

In this playful street artwork by JPS, we see the stuffed bear from the movie Ted engaging in some ‘extracurricular activity’. The stencil was thrown up on a building somewhere in Stavanger, Norway earlier this year.

levitating tree street art illusion by daniel siering and mario shu (2)

Artists Daniel Siering and Mario Shu used foil and spray paint to magically levitate a tree in Potsdam, Germany. The duo, who are co-workers at ART-EFX, wrapped a portion of the trunk in foil, spray painting the background scenery behind the tree to create the illusion. Be sure to check out the video below to get a sense of what it looks like in person.

STRATEGICALLY PLACED STREET ART

strategically-placed-street-art-by-tabby-super-mario-piranha-plant at bus stop

Artwork by TABBY

It’s all about perspective in this clever piece of street art by Tabby. If you happen to be standing at this particular bus stop you’ll enjoy a view of what appears to be a gigantic piranha plant from Nintendo’s popular Super Mario series.

The structure used to represent the famous ‘green tube’ from the video game is actually a Flak Tower which were:

8 complexes of large, above-ground, anti-aircraft gun blockhouse towers constructed in the cities of Berlin (3), Hamburg (2), and Wien (3) from 1940 onwards. Other cities that used flak towers included Stuttgart and Frankfurt. They were used by the Luftwaffe to defend against Allied air raids on these cities during World War II. They also served as air-raid shelters for tens of thousands of people and to coordinate air defence. [source]

And there you have it! A little history, a little nostalgia, a little art and a big grin on anybody standing in that bus shelter.
