Banksy’s First Art Project of 2015 was a Trip to Gaza

banksy gaza 2015 (5)

Street artist and provocateur Banksy has just released his first project of 2015. The artist recently shared some new artworks and a mock travel video from his recent trip to Gaza. This is not the first time Banksy has ventured to Palestine. In 2005, Banksy created nine images on the Israeli West Bank wall.

Love it or hate it, the artist has a remarkable ability to create awareness and stir controversy on any subject matter he/she elects to highlight. And in an age where everyone has a camera, I’m astounded that Banksy has managed to keep his identity a secret.

Charles Leval aka Levalet, is a French artist that uses the streets of Paris as his canvas. The artist likes to incorporate the surroundings into his site-specific wheatpaste artworks, and his figures often seem to interact with their environment. According to an interview with Underground Paris, the 27-year old’s work began appearing in Paris in 2012. An art teacher by day, the artist enjoys exploring the city and seeking out potential ‘canvases’.

To keep up with the latest, be sure to follow Levalet at the online links below.

sidewalk art only appears when it rains peregrine church rainworks (1)

“It’s going to rain anyway. Why not do something fun with it?”

This simple thought by Peregrine Church has led to “rainworks”, street art that only appears when it rains. The Seattle-based artist uses a product called Always Dry (the Wood & Stone formula), a superhydrophobic coating that protects surfaces from water and other liquids.

Church uses stencils to spray his artworks onto sidewalks and the pieces are temporary, lasting 4 months to a year depending on foot traffic and abrasion. The messages and artworks slowly fade over time and are most vivid in the first couple weeks.

You can find a list of all of the rainwork locations in Seattle on this interactive google map. For more, be sure to check out Rainworks at the links below.

Artist Bachor Fills Potholes with Food and Flower Mosaics (19)

Chicago has a pothole problem. To raise awareness and beautify the streets, artist Jim Bachor is filling the unsightly potholes with awesome mosaics of foods and flowers. The artist is well known for his stunning mosaics. In his artist statement, Bachor adds:

“In the ancient world, mosaics were used to capture images of everyday life. These colorful pieces of stone or glass set in mortar were the photographs of empires long past. Marble and glass do not fade. Mortar is mortar. An ancient mosaic looks exactly as intended by the artist who produced it over two millennia ago. What else can claim that kind of staying power? I find this idea simply amazing.”

For more amazing mosaics, be sure to check out Bachor’s artwork at the links below.

Artists James Jean and Tristan Eaton work side by side on their respective murals for the Pow! Wow! Long Beach Art Festival. Believe it or not, James (left) is using just a paintbrush to create his artwork while Tristan works with spray paint.

The artworks (nearly complete) can be seen on the side of the Varden Hotel in downtown Long Beach, California. Walls around the city have been graciously offered to a small group of local and international artists to put up their amazing works.

Street Artist mobstr and City Worker Have Year Long Exchange on Red Wall in London (30)

Street artist Mobstr recently shared a photo story that took place over the course of a year. The artist explains:

“I cycled past this wall on the way to work for years. I noticed that graffiti painted within the red area was ‘buffed’ with red paint. However, graffiti outside of the red area would be removed via pressure washing. This prompted the start of an experiment. Unlike other works, I was very uncertain as to what results it would yield. Below is what transpired over the course of a year.”

long-beach-museum-of-art-vitality-and-verve-street-art-exhibit

Over a period of two weeks, the Long Beach Museum of Art gave a group of contemporary artists free reign over their walls for their latest exhibit, Vitality and Verve. The result is a convergence of graffiti, street art, mixed media installations and traditional canvas paintings. The museum’s Executive Director, Ron Nelson adds:

“One of the goals behind Vitality and Verve is to spotlight artists who are stepping out of their studios to paint on a grand scale using outdoor walls as their canvas as well as urban artists who are beginning to work in a traditional studio setting.”

The exhibition will run through September 27, 2015 and once it’s over the walls will be painted white once again. While the thought will sadden many who enjoy the works, the ephemeral nature of the exhibit reflects an aspect of street art these artists know all too well.

Owen Dippie recently completed this awesome mural in Brooklyn, New York. For those unfamiliar, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were all named after famous Renaissance artists: Leonardo (da Vinci), Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo.

The New-Zealand born artist currently calls New York home and you can see more of his paintings at the links below.

Community Unites Over Street Art Project to Paint houses in their Neighborhood (2)

The Mexican government recently teamed up with Germen Crew—a youth organization and group of street artists—to revitalize Palmitas, a village in Mexico’s Pachuca district, through art.

The idea was to bring the community together by painting the exteriors of more than 200 homes, comprising a surface area of more than 20,000 square meters. Local youths pitched in to help and the project has been hailed a huge success for not only beautifying the area, but leading to a decrease in crime and violence in the neighborhood.

MTO Completes 2-Part Mural in Two Countries to Highlight Immigration Issues (1)

Street artist MTO (featured previously), recently completed a two-part mural in Sliema, Malta and Sapri, Italy entitled, “The Mediterranean Tunnel“.

The two-part mural highlights immigration issues in the two countries and MTO also links to two articles on the topic in his Facebook album (Malta Independent, Huffington Post)

The latest mural is a continuation of last year’s piece, “The Mediterranean Door“, that MTO completed for the Malta Street Art Festival at Sliema’s sea front. You can see the full album of that piece here.

The Little People Project by Slinkachu (22 Photos)

Since 2006, street artist and photographer Slinkachu has been remodelling and painting miniature model train set characters, placing them in the streets and photographing their ‘daily lives’; leaving behind the tiny installations for others to discover.

The artist has left hundreds of his works around the UK and beyond and you can see much of the nearly decade-long project on his website and blog. The artist adds:

It is both a street art installation project and a photography project. The street-based side of my work plays with the notion of surprise and I aim to encourage city-dwellers to be more aware of their surroundings. The scenes I set up, more evident through the photography and the titles I give these scenes, aim to reflect the loneliness and melancholy of living in a big city, almost being lost and overwhelmed. But underneath this, there is always some humour. I want people to be able to empathise with the tiny people in my works. [source]

If you’re interested in limited edition prints of any of Slinkachu’s works, he is represented by Andipa Gallery in London. To see more of the ‘Little People Project’ check out Slinkachu at the links below.

Nikolaj Arndt is an artist and professor who has been painting amazing 3D sidewalk artworks since 2009. Born in Gavrilov, Russia, the artist currently lives in Germany where he teaches at a private art school and also does commissions for ad agencies and galleries.

For the 3D effect to work, viewers have to look at the artwork from a specific vantage point, as the image itself is quite stretched and plays with perspective to achieve the 3D feel.

Below you will find a small gallery of his 3D sidewalk art. To see more check out his official website.
