banksy shredder painting at auction Banksy Artwork Self Destructs after Selling for $1 Million at Auction

A Banksy prank several years in the making has just revealed itself. “Girl With Balloon” was the final item in an auction at Sotheby’s in London Friday night, fetching a record sale price for the notorious artist.

Shortly after the hammer came down, the artwork churned to life, destroying itself via a shredder custom-built into the frame. Banksy revealed such on Instagram where he first shared a photo of the partially shredded work and then followed up with a video of him (or someone on his team) installing the shredder.

Ironically, the stunt and the accompanying press coverage will no doubt raise the profile of the artwork and likely increase its value (and resale value) even more. You can see video and stills of the prank below.

For the last decade, Berlin-based artist Jan Vormann has been patching crumbling facades with LEGO. The artist has been filling cracks, gaps and holes with the ubiquitous blocks and has inspired and encouraged other to do the same around the globe.

In an evolution of the project, Vormann has launched Dispatchwork which tracks, documents and catalogues people around the world using LEGO to ‘reclaim their share of the public space’.

For more on the project as well as an interactive map of pictures and locations around the world of LEGO patchwork, check out dispatchwork.info or follow the project on Instagram.

Banksy’s final work of 2018 is a stencil in South Wales’ Port Talbot. The image appears on two sides of a garage depicting a child enjoying what appears to be snow falling, while the other side reveals it is a dumpster fire emitting ash.

The artwork is reportedly in response a direct message the artist received on Instagram from Gary Owen, 55, who said he messaged the artist in August asking him to highlight Port Talbot’s dust problem from the nearby steel factories. [source]

Dutch street artists Jan Is De Man and Deef Feed recently completed this amazing mural on the side of an apartment building in Utrecht, Netherlands.

According to Jan, the artists asked people in the neighbourhood to share their favourite books so they could incorporate local favs into the 3D mural (also known as trompe-l’œil). The mural took about a week to paint and you can see the fantastic end result below.

The Venice Biennale is recognized as one of the most prestigious art shows in the world. “For some reason I’ve never been invited,” Banksy laments, as he decided this year to set up his own stall anyway, at the famous Piazza San Marco.

“Venice in Oi” is an original work by Banksy that features Venice’s famous Gondolas dwarfed by a giant cruise ship. The painting spans over 9 framed canvasses and the video posted on Instagram (embedded below) includes a perfect cut to an actual cruise ship looming behind.

Indian artist Baadal Nanjundaswamy found a creative way to protest the outrageous potholes in his city (Bengaluru, India).

In an effort to bring attention to the terrible road conditions, he created a parody video where he pretended to be an astronaut walking on the moon—that is until a car passes by and the camera pans to show the road.

Check out the viral vid embedded below.

Not only was the video successful in creating awareness about the problem but it led to direct and actionable results. As the city was forced to promptly respond and road crews were filmed fixing the potholes!

Check out the video below for proof.

The creative approach has even spread to other parts of the globe, with Baadal recently sharing a video of another activist in Mexico using the same concept to spurn his city to action.

Check out the video embedded below.

Baadal Nanjundaswamy has actually become well-known for incorporating potholes into his street art. If you want to see more check out his work on Facebook.

You can also see a close-up photo of his homemade astronaut helmet below. Bravo Baadal!

Banksy Just Opened a Pop-Up Homewares Store Called Gross Domestic Product

Legendary street artist and provocateur extraordinaire, Banksy, is back with his latest offering, a pop-up homewares store in Croydon called Gross Domestic Product (where art irritates life).

GDP is the homewares brand from Banksy and the pop-up will be the first and only store. The Cryodon showroom is for display purposes only and the doors will remain locked with all sales to be conducted online whenever the store opens.

As per Banksy:

“This shop has come about as a result of legal action. A greeting cards company are trying to seize legal custody of the name Banksy from the artist, who has been advised the best way to prevent this is to sell his own range of branded merchandise.”

According to Colossal, the Welcome Mats were stitched by refugees in Greek detainment camps, and all proceed will go back to them. Also, all proceeds from the doll sets will go to support the purchase of a replacement boat for activist Pia Klemp, whose boat was confiscated by the Italian government.

Prices start at £10 and go up from there. Inventory is limited and you probably won’t have a realistic chance at acquiring anything.

Below you will find photos of the pop-up shop along with some of the items that will be for sale in the coming days.

We last featured the amazing street art of Nikita Golubev aka Pro Boy Nick back in April of 2017. Since then, the Moscow-based artist continues to “dig art out of dirt”.

While the artworks last only until the next rainstorm or car wash (the latter unlikely given the current state of dirt on the vehicles!) the pieces live on through social media and photography.

Golubev has garnered the most buzz for his dirty street art but he is also an accomplished muralist and painter. Be sure to check him out on Instagram for many more awesome works!

Chicago-based mosaic artist Jim Bachor (featured previously) recently completed this quarantine-themed series of artworks on Gunnison Street (just west of Broadway) in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.

Bachor says it was his first ‘multi-install’ of pothole art he’s ever done. Sadly, a truck ran over the beer-themed mosaic before the mortar had fully set but hey, that’s street art.

While the toilet paper, beer can and hand sanitizer are instantly recognizable, the fourth mosaic depicts a star from the Chicago flag, meant to generate civic pride, Bachor says.

Bachor’s pothole project began in 2013 and he has since completed nearly 100 mosaics in cities across the United States. To see more of Bachor’s work, check him out at the links below!

beyond crisis by saype switzerland land art 5 Massive Biodegradable Artwork of Hope Appears Atop Swiss Hillside

Artist Guillaume Legros (more commonly known as SAYPE), has garnered international acclaim for his massive artworks found at the intersection of land art and street art.

Using 100% biodegradable spray paint derived from natural pigments like coal and chalk, Saype’s giant frescos ‘fade to the rhythm of the regrowth of grass before disappearing completely and naturally.’

The ephemeral works are captured in photographic form before disappearing forever, and he has been invited by tourism and cultural boards around the globe to create his works. Previous projects include colossal pieces in Berlin, Geneva, Andorra, and even at the foot of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Saype’s latest work, entitled BEYOND CRISIS, was created atop a hillside near the resort town of Leysin, in western Switzerland and measures over 3000 m2 (32,200 sq ft).

For more incredible works, check out Saype’s art at the links below.

In a rebuke to President Trump, the mayor of Washington DC, Muriel Boswer, unveiled a two-block long mural painted onto the street leading up to the White House declaring “Black Lives Matter”, renaming the plaza outside the White House to Black Lives Matter Plaza.

The mural and street sign were unveiled on Friday as the Plaza has been sight for ongoing protests in the nation’s capital. Mayor Bowser is a black woman and Democrat that has been in a battle with the President.

Interestingly, the local Black Lives Matter chapter, panned what they saw as a PR stunt and ‘performative distraction’:

On Thursday, the Mayor also demanded the President, “withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from Washington DC.” She also criticised troops for not wearing any identification, allowing them operate outside “established chains of commands,” she said. [source]

Google Maps has been quick to update the street name on their system and satellite imagery from Friday shows just how big the mural is.

Below you will find videos and additional photos of the mural and street sign change.

banksy strikes london tube july 2020 2 I get lockdown. But I get up again Banksy Strikes London Tube with Mask Message

Despite the lockdown, Banksy has remained active, using his art and platform to celebrate the ‘superhero medical workers’ and address systemic racism.

In his fifth artwork released since the lockdown began in March, Banksy strikes the London tube with some new works and words of encouragement: “I get lockdown. But I get up again.”

The message is a play on the chorus from the hit song “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba. On Instagram—the artist’s only official account—he also encourages people to wear masks, saying: “If you don’t mask – you don’t get.”

Outside of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is a pedestrian-only walkway (Avenue de Musée) that features giant chrome spheres sporadically placed along the street.

Each year, the museum calls for proposals for a temporary installation on the walkway with a $50,000 budget awarded to the winning entry to execute their vision.

In 2018, architecture design firm NÓS was selected to bring their “Moving Dunes” project to life. By painting the street, they transformed it into surreal undulating sand dunes which sought to highlight the museum’s featured exhibition at the time, “From Africa to the Americas: Picasso face-to-face, from yesterday to today “. For more projects by NÓS, check out their site or Instagram.
